Chinese Braised Beef

This Chinese braised beef and potato is a traditional dish, where all you need is one pot, a few ingredients, and a bit of time. It’s so easy to make and so tasty.

INGREDIENTS:

2lb boneless chuck roast, cut into 1”x2” pieces
1lb potato

1 large onion

1 carrot
3 clove garlic, sliced
3 slice ginger, 1 inch long each
1tbsp oyster sauce
1tbsp hoisin sauce
1tbsp rock sugar
2tbsp cooking wine
1tbsp soy sauce to taste
1/2tbsp dark soy sauce
Salt and black pepper  to taste
Scallion and cilantro for garnish

Spices
2 star anise
1 dried orange peel, broken into pieces
1 bay leaf

 

Directions:

Step 1:     Cut beef into 1”x2” pieces.   Cut potato, carrot, onion into chunks.  Slice ginger and garlic.

    

 

 

Step 2:  Heat up the pan.  Add 3 tablespoons of oil.   Add beef and ginger.   Cook under medium heat until the beef is slightly brown. About 3 minutes.    Add garlic, onion and carrots and black pepper.   Stir fry till onion becomes translucent.   Put in star anise, orange peel, and bay leaf.  Add 1tbsp oyster sauce, 1tbsp hoisin sauce, 1tbsp rock sugar, 2tbsp cooking wine, 1tbsp soy sauce to taste, 1/2tbsp dark soy sauce.

        

 

 

Step 3: Add 2 cups of water and bring to boil. Turn the heat to low and simmer with lid on for 2 – 2.5 hours until tender. Turn the beef with a spatula every now and then. Add salt to taste

 

Step 4:    Add potato cubes and mix with the beef. Bring the stew to boil and simmer with lid on until the radish is soft. About 30 minutes. Sprinkle some scallions and cilantro and serve with white rice.
