Chinese Broccoli (gai lan) with Minced Garlic

broccoli with garlic sauce is a great dish to have with any meal. Served with some white or brown rice, it’s tasty and guilt-free, and it’s easier than you’d think to emulate that restaurant flavor!  It may be eaten along with any pork, beef or chicken dishes. The last time I ordered this dish from a Chinese restaurant, I was surprised at how expensive it was. Since then on, I have been making this dish at home. Not only is this dish healthy and but a vegetarian one as well. Simply delicious!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 lb Chinese broccoli
  • 2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sliced ginger
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Directions:

Step 1:   Prepare gai lan by trimming the hard end of the stems and rinsing thoroughly. Set aside.  Slice the ginger.  Mince the garlic.

Step 2:    Combine water, ginger, one tablespoon oil and salt in a pan and bring to a boil over medium high heat. Add Chinese broccoli and let it boil for 30 seconds.  Then turn it over.   Lower heat to medium, cover and cook until most liquid has evaporated and stem is tender when pierced with a fork, around 4-5 minutes. Transfer to a serving plate with sliced ginger.

Step 3:   Mix minced garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil.  Pour over Chinese broccoli.   Serve
